PILAR DIAMOND AWARD

Mohamed Q. Amin (he/they) is an Indo-Caribbean, Queer, and Muslim immigrant, LGBTQ+ rights advocate, and the founder of the Caribbean Equality Project, a NYC-based organization uplifting Afro- and Indo-Caribbean LGBTQ+ voices. A survivor of anti-LGBTQ+ hate violence, Amin transformed trauma into activism, championing immigrant justice, LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, racial equity, mental health access, and civic engagement across Caribbean neighborhoods in New York City.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Amin led the groundbreaking “Caribbeans Count” Census campaign, helping ensure accurate representation of Afro- and Indo-Caribbean communities and contributing to a notable population increase in Queens. He also played a key role during NYC’s 2021-2023 redistricting cycle, advocating for fair maps for AAPI communities and helping secure a historic $30M investment in the state budget for AAPI organizations.

A cultural curator and storyteller, Amin leads My Truth, My Story, and has produced landmark exhibitions and films celebrating queer Caribbean identity. He also co-founded the annual LGBTQ+ Community Iftar and leads the Phagwah Social Justice Collective, building multicultural and multi-faith solidarity.

With over 15 years of community leadership and a B.A. in Economics from Queens College, Amin continues to drive equity, visibility, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities.
